Yungaburra – Centre of the Universe and Gateway to the Atherton Tablelands
For both local and international visitors, the Atherton Tablelands offer an endless array of opportunities to experience, explore, and enjoy. This spectacular natural wonderland is a haven of unique flora and fauna, with landscapes that stretch from tumbling waterfalls and tranquil crater lakes to lush rainforests and scenic country drives. The world-renowned Curtain Fig Tree stands as a symbol of the region’s ancient ecology, while the diverse wildlife—some found nowhere else on Earth—makes every visit a chance to encounter something extraordinary.
Beyond its breathtaking natural beauty, the Tablelands are also rich in heritage and culture. For thousands of years, the Aboriginal People have been the traditional caretakers of this land, nurturing and managing country with deep knowledge and respect. Their connection to the Tablelands continues today, and at Yungaburra Tours we proudly acknowledge and honour these First Nations custodians, whose wisdom has preserved the landscapes we now live, work, and play in.
The historic village of Yungaburra, originally known as Allumbah Pocket, provides a window into the region’s past. Its heritage-listed buildings and charming streets tell stories of resilience and community spirit, while its pivotal role during World War II, when more than 100,000 troops were stationed across the Atherton Tablelands, adds a layer of profound historical significance. Visitors can pay their respects at the Rocky Creek Memorial Park and walk along the moving Afghanistan Avenue of Honour, both reminders of courage, sacrifice, and remembrance.
Those who live here are deeply proud of this unique and magnificent part of the world. They never tire of its beauty—whether it’s the tranquillity of a rainforest walk, the charm of heritage villages, or the vibrancy of local wildlife—and are always eager to share it with travellers. A visit to the Atherton Tablelands is more than just a tour; it’s an invitation to connect with nature, immerse yourself in history, and discover the cultural heartbeat of Tropical North Queensland.
